Demetrius Mazacoufa is an attorney in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia. He has a general civil law practice, with an emphasis on health care issues. It is divided between civil litigation and administrative/governmental law. He is general counsel for several Georgia health profession organizations. His client list also includes businesses and individuals in a wide range of general civil law matters.
In addition to his work as an attorney, Mr. Mazacoufa is a registered lobbyist at the Georgia General Assembly. He has represented a variety of clients before the Legislature for more than twenty-five years. Among his notable legislative successes are the complete re-writing of the Registered Professional Nurse Practice Act (1990), pro-consumer changes to hearing aid dispenser laws (1992), protecting patients in end-of-life matters (1993), the passage of a new Dietetic Practice Act (1994), changes in evidence law to ensure the confidentialilty of communications between a patient and their mental health professional (1995), expanded scopes of practice for audiologists and speech-language pathologists (1999), new-born hearing screening legislation (1999 and 2000), the creation of a statewide school nurse program funded by tobacco settlement monies (2000), enactment of a new law for stand-by guardianships whereby health fragile parents can nominate a guardian for their minor children (2003), coalition work to increase insurance coverage for certain health conditions like diabetes and morbid obesity (2004), and the passage of legislation granting advanced practice registered nurses the authority to write prescription drug orders (2006).
Mr. Mazacoufa lectures extensively on health/legal matters and is the author of numerous articles on the legal aspects of the health care industry. He has testified before committees of the U.S. Congress and the Georgia Legislature on these and similar issues. He has received many awards for his public and private service.
