Is there a sample letter I could use as a guide when I write a legislator?

Yes, this sample letter is designed to give you an idea of what to include in a letter to a legislator.  Remember . . . this is a guide and should not be copied for what you want to say to a lawmaker.

Sample letter:

The Honorable John Doe
Georgia State Capitol
Atlanta, GA 30334

Dear Representative or Senator Doe:

I am a teacher at XYZ Elementary School in MyTown, Georgia.  I teach reading to fifth grade students.  I am writing to ask for your support of an appropriation item in the upcoming budget; specifically for $30,000,000 to continue the funding for the state’s school nurse program.

You may think it peculiar that a teacher wants you to support another profession, but you need to appreciate how important it is have a healthy student in my class.  Otherwise, it becomes increasingly difficult to teach an ill student.  In former days without these nurses available, I and school staff had to suspend our duties to take care of such a student or to assist a student who had to take medicine.

[ If you have details or examples, it would be nice to include in this paragraph].

Your support of this issue would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your help.

Sincerely yours,
